Science at the South Pole
South Pole Skype Today Well, attempted Skype anyway!
Today we had the most amazing opportunity to Skype with Savannah's aunt who is working for the National Science Foundation at the U.S. South Pole Station. Unfortunately our Skype video connection didn't work, but we were able to speak with her and two colleagues about living and working at the South Pole. It was a super cool experience! We learned that the high temperature has been 0.5 F and the low has been -107 F! Now that is COLD!
They have a greenhouse, but most of their food is frozen. Well, that makes sense.
A heated pole in the ice melts water to be pumped up for use in everyday needs! It runs like a small city with medical care, library, a gym, kitchen, and housing! SO COOL!
Legos are for EVERYONE! Star Wars Fans are EVERYWHERE~
